gong= practise, cultivate, refine

Qigong = internal energy work

Qigong (also known as Chi Kung or Chi Gong) is one of the oldest exercises in Chinese history. It is a mind and body workout that seeks to stimulate the flow of qi, the elemental life force, along the energy channels and meridians throughout the body. It offers a practical, effective and long-term solution to deal with the stress of modern living. Attractively, qigong is easy to learn and can be adapted to different physical abilities, regardless of fitness level and age. It can be practised walking, standing, sitting or even lying down.

Certain slow movements seen in qigong look similar to t’ai chi and the two practices complement each other perfectly: they both exploit the development of energy-building techniques. Qigong practices incorporate a range of simple movements and postures (standing or sitting) that are accompanied by a variety of breathing techniques. The primary goal is to enhance one’s own energetic level, the level of qi through breathing and concentration.

For the beginner, the benefits of practising qigong will be seen in a relatively short time. Significant benefits include:

  • Reduced high blood pressure

  • A relaxed state of body and mind
  • Patience and calmness
  • Greater resistance to stress and disease
